Accommodation for SA Interns Abroad

What accommodation options are available, what they cost in rands, and which destinations offer the best value for South African students.

Good news: most popular destinations are cheaper than Johannesburg

Bangkok, Bali, Barcelona and even Dubai offer accommodation that compares favourably to Sandton or Cape Town City Bowl rents. London is the exception. Our team arranges verified, safe accommodation for all placements before you arrive.

Accommodation Types Explained

Shared Flat / House Share

The most common option for interns. You share a flat with 2–4 others — often other international interns or young professionals. Kitchen, bathroom and living area shared. Best balance of cost and social experience.

Bangkok
R3,000–R6,000/mo
Barcelona
R7,000–R12,000/mo
London
R14,000–R22,000/mo

Co-Living Spaces

All-inclusive furnished rooms with high-speed WiFi, common areas, and regular social events. Popular in Barcelona, Bali, and Dubai. Slightly pricier than a shared flat but you arrive to a ready-made social circle of fellow interns and remote workers.

Bali
R4,500–R9,000/mo
Dubai
R10,000–R18,000/mo
Lisbon
R8,000–R14,000/mo

Employer-Provided Accommodation

Some host companies, especially in Dubai and hospitality sectors, provide subsidised or free accommodation as part of the internship package. This is a significant financial benefit — always ask when negotiating your placement. We flag when our partner companies offer this.

Destination Breakdown for SA Students

Bali — Best Value

Private villa room with pool: R4,000–R7,000/month. With the ZAR/IDR exchange rate, Bali is exceptional value. Monthly costs total R8,000–R15,000 including food and transport. Cheaper than most SA cities.

Bangkok — Excellent Value

Modern city apartment room: R4,000–R8,000/month. BTS Skytrain access means you can live slightly outside the centre and still commute easily. Total monthly budget: R12,000–R20,000.

Barcelona — Good Value

Shared flat room: R7,000–R12,000/month in good neighbourhoods (Gracia, Poble Sec, Eixample). Food and nightlife are affordable relative to other Western European cities. Total: R18,000–R28,000/month.

London — Most Expensive

Zone 2–3 room share: R14,000–R22,000/month. Budget carefully. SEMP/Erasmus+ funding (if eligible) can offset costs. Career prestige is high — many SA students consider London worth the premium.
