Practical Guide

Banking Abroad for SA Students

Forex costs from South Africa are high. Here is how to save thousands of rands using the right accounts and cards during your international internship.

The hidden cost of using your SA card abroad

Traditional SA banks charge 2–3.5% forex conversion fees plus transaction fees of R15–R40 per swipe. On a 6-month internship spending R15,000/month, that is R5,000–R9,000 lost to bank fees. Wise typically costs 0.4–1% for currency conversion. The difference is significant.

  • Still pricier than Wise for regular conversions

ZAR to Currency Tips by Destination

Dubai (AED)

AED is pegged to USD. Convert ZAR to USD or AED with Wise before arrival. Cash is still widely used for local markets and taxis — keep some AED on hand.

Barcelona / EU (EUR)

Open a EUR account on Wise. Card payments dominant — very little cash needed. Spain is one of Europe's most card-friendly countries.

Bali / Thailand

Cash is still important. Withdraw local currency (IDR/THB) from ATMs using your Wise card — significantly cheaper than airport exchange booths. Bali money changers can offer good rates too; use authorised changers only.

London (GBP)

Open a GBP account on Wise. Contactless card payments everywhere. Oyster card for transport — top up with Wise Mastercard. London is essentially cashless for most transactions.
