Barcelona has a thriving startup and scale-up scene with heavy demand for marketing interns. Bangkok specifically has conference and events venues, destination management companies, and tourism boards that work with interns. The scale of operations (Thailand receives 35M+ tourists/year) means you work on large programmes. Most affordable destination for this sector.

Europe's top city destination for international tourism, with a world-class events industry. Interns at Barcelona tourism organisations, conference venues, and event agencies work on genuine large-scale productions. Ideal for students wanting European industry experience.

Communications & PR

Top pick: London, UK

London has the most developed PR and communications industry outside New York. SA students have an advantage here: English is your first language, and the large SA diaspora community makes it easier to get introductions and references. UK PR internships are increasingly paid (mandatory above 4 weeks). Monthly cost from R22,000 — high but justified for this sector.

What to Look for in a Marketing/Hospitality Placement

Regardless of destination, the quality of your placement matters more than the country you're in. Look for:

  • Real responsibilities (not just admin) — ask this explicitly in interviews
  • A named supervisor, not just "the team"
